Most Anticipated TV Shows of Summer 2014

The debris of many season finales over the last few months are still causing shockwaves and speculation throughout the internet and as the fallout of the axing season seemingly comes to an end, there is still plenty to look forward to over the summer months in terms of new and returning TV shows.

Below is a list of some of the shows that are a must watch over the next few months as anticipation begins to boil over.

NOTE: this is obviously not a list of all the shows that are being release between now and the “fall” schedule, but merely some of the shows that have a lot to live up to and what I am most excited to see.

-          Halt And Catch Fire: 1st June

Promotional poster for the series
AMC has been home to some of the most recent successful dramas (Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, for example) and this show could potentially be among them.

Set in the 1980s, the series dramatizes the personal computing boom through the eyes of a visionary, an engineer and a prodigy whose innovations directly confront the corporate behemoths of the time.
The concept of greed is something worth watching in its own right (if done correctly) on a show but the elements of computers, drama, Texas and inflated egos make this a show that could be a new hit.

-          Orange Is The New Black: 6th June

Netflix is on the path to becoming an unstoppable juggernaut in the TV & film industry with its own slate of original and critically acclaimed programming.

One of them, Orange is the New Black, is coming back for a second season in just a few weeks that will require a binge watch of all episodes in one sitting! The series centres on Piper Chapman and a group of women and their relationships with fellow inmates in a prison.
Check out the trailer above.

-          Falling Skies: 22nd June

The fight for survival continues
Coming back for its fourth season, Tom Mason and the 2nd Mass continue to battle for survival and the planet in a post-apocalyptic alien infested world.

The Sci-fi drama series on TNT has proved to be a huge hit, growing from strength to strength in terms of character development, cinematography and plot reveals.

This season has a lot to live up to and a lot of questions to be answered…

-          The Last Ship: 22nd June

The last ship has the potential to be an entertaining series. This is mainly because it’s produced by Michael Bay, you know, the explosion loving Hollywood director/producer?

Here’s the synopsis of the programme:
“Their mission is simple: Find a cure. Stop the virus. Save the world. When a global pandemic wipes out eighty percent of the planet's population, the crew of a lone naval destroyer must find a way to pull humanity from the brink of extinction.”

Now you might be thinking that the whole pandemic thing is getting old (Walking Dead, Helix and so on) but being confined to one space – a ship – is a new environment and intriguing to see how they go about do this.

-          The Leftovers: 29th June

The rapture is coming...
HBO has an impressive résumé (Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, True Detective, and many more) this series looks like it could be added among them.

With an interesting premise about the show that’s based on those left behind after the rapture, it might make you think a little bit about how you live your life now.

Written by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek Into Darkness) that’s based on a novel by Tom Perotta of the same name, this is one of my most anticipated shows of the summer.

-          Extant: 9th July

Extant is a new science-fiction drama series that revolves around an astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry) who returns home to her family after a year in outer space inexplicably pregnant.

Mainly because of its star, Halle Berry, this show seems worth a watch but the whole premise that it could lead to mankind’s extinction (highlighted in the trailer above) makes it even more interesting.

-          Hemlock Grove: 11th July

Another Netflix original here. The horror thriller Hemlock Grove is returning for its second season this July as the leads continue to shed light on recent brutal murder cases with a hint of a supernatural element.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of horrors, the supernatural or just good programming.

-          The Strain: 13th July

Another supernatural programme here, but this time from director/creator Guillermo Del Torro. Based on Del Torro’s and Chuck Hogan’s novel trilogy of the same name about a vampiric virus spreading through New York, this show could get lost within the many vampire shows out there… But with Del Torro’s name attached it should have enough to stand out.

Check out the trailer above and the synopsis below:

“A plane lands at John F. Kennedy International Airport with the lights off and doors sealed. Epidemiologist Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and his team are sent to investigate. On board they find two hundred corpses and four survivors. The situation deteriorates when the bodies begin disappearing from morgues. Goodweather and a small group of helpers find themselves battling to protect not only their own loved ones, but the entire city, from an ancient threat to humanity.”

-          Manhattan: 27th July

The race for the Manhattan project begins on 27th July
Set against the backdrop of the greatest clandestine race against time in the history of science with the mission to build the world's first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Flawed scientists and their families attempt to co-exist in a world where secrets and lies infiltrate every aspect of their lives.

This show sounds promising enough and the visual feel of the 1940s/50s gives it that distinct flavour that might help it stand out in this overcrowded market

  Matador: 15th July

Not much information released for this one yet but intriguing none the less!

Matador is an upcoming American television series co-created by Roberto Orci, Andrew Orci, Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie. The series chronicles the rise of popular football (or soccer) star Antonio “Matador” Bravo, known for his ventures both on and off the field. Unbeknownst to the public and his family, he is also a skilled covert operative performing missions for a branch of the CIA.

Sounds like an odd mix but with Roberto Orci attached (Star Trek, Transformers, Fringe, Sleepy Hollow) as well as long-time collaborator Alex Kurtzman, I feel that this is in good hands.

-          Outlander: 9th August

After the impressive first season of pirate adventure prequel to the book Treasure Island in the form of Black Sails, Starz network is set to release another show based on another book; Outlander.

This tells the tale of a 20th century nurse who time travels to the 18th century Scotland, eventually living two lives with two separate husbands. This romantic-adventure could be a nice break in the later summer months and a welcomed change of pace.

Let’s hope that it lives up to expectations!

-          Legends: 13th August

Let's see how long Sean Bean lives in this show...
Ah Sean Bean.

I’m pretty sure that that is all that needs to be said to get you to watch it! The show follows a deep-cover operative named Martin Odum, who has an uncanny ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. But his own identity comes into question when a mysterious stranger suggests that Martin isn't who he thinks he is.

This show looks like it could be another great action thriller from Howard Gordon, the creator of two TV giants 24 and Homeland. Tune in August 13th to find out.

That’s it from me! Let me know if there’s any you’re interested in that’s not on my list coming out soon.

Greatest Movie Monsters

In honor of the release of Godzilla the last week, I thought it would be fun to look back at some the best (not necessarily the most successful in terms of Box Office profits), most badass and the some of the most iconic movie monsters over the years.

RULES:
-          The monsters in question must have committed some sort of an atrocity (i.e. murder/destruction/etc.)
-          Must have been portrayed within film
-          Does not have to be a villain
-          Has some form of abnormality

So without further ado, here are eight of the best monsters in cinematic history (in my personal opinion) in no particular order:

Frankenstein's monster
Possibly one of the most iconic creatures in history, Frankenstein’s monster has to have a mention here! The classic 1931 film saw Mary Shelley’s novel brought to the screen and since, has sparked numerous other attempts of bringing the monster to life (no pun intended) but none living up to the original film.

Frankenstein, aside from being one of the most iconic monsters on this list, and one of the most terrifying (if you saw it in 1931, I imagine) committed a number of murders in his short history as well as sparking an angry band of peasants.

Not bad for a man-made creation… wait, what?

The vampire killing... vampire
A controversial choice here, but a monster all the same; a human-vampire hybrid that is. Blade is one of the only heroes on this list, yet kills a handful to still earn his place. A real cult classic of a film that is actually based on a Marvel comic and an ultimate badass.

Well worth a watch!

Kong in the 2005 remake
The eighth wonder of the world! Back to the actual monsters now, it would seem wrong to not have the king of the jungle on this list. Again, one of the most iconic monsters in movie history, King Kong proves his worth in the 1933 film, the 1976 version and the 2005 remake.

Over the last 80 years, Kong has been a gigantic presence within our culture, being parodied in almost everything and seen everywhere. His iconic scene atop the Empire State Building battling the airplanes was enough to get him on here really.

Forever in your dreams
This truly disturbing monster is a disfigured serial killer who hunts his victims within their dreams with a razor glove… How is that not terrifying?! The vengeful spirit that seems to have no end in killing also has no end in the number of films starring the burnt monster in the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

Just picture him and have fun going to sleep tonight…

Hulk angry...
The bug green rage machine earns a spot on my list here. Aside from being one of the avengers and one of Marvel’s greatest successes, the Hulk is a beast inside a man (or a man inside a beast…) that was a result of Bruce Banner’s exposure to too much gamma radiation.

The latest appearance of the Hulk in the Avengers film left no doubt just how much destruction this monster can do. Just utter “Hulk… Smash.” And he’ll show you why he’s on this list.

Yippee-ki-yay moth-... wait, wrong film
Just because it’s still one of my favourite films, Ridley Scott’s Alien just has to be on this list. The 1979 film spawned an entire franchise, which is now receiving the prequel treatment in the form of Prometheus. This highly aggressive extra-terrestrial that hunts its victims is intimidating in its own right, but the face-hugger’s that give birth to the chest bursting moments are possibly the worst parts of this creature as well as one of the most iconic moments in cinematic history.

Just stay away from it…

He doesn't look so mean..?
The monster from J.J. Abrams’ hit film Cloverfield actually has no name. This does not mean it’s not worthy to be on this list however! The unnamed creature rises above the Manhattan skyline and wreaks enough havoc and destruction that it results in the US government to call in a nuclear strike against the city in order to try and kill it.

Seen only in snippets throughout, the terror of this monster is emphasised through the hand-held camera technique used in the film. Its deafening sounds and subsequent “parasites” that come with it make it a worthy member of this list and a terrifying monster in general.

Roar - said the lizard.
Last but not most definitely not least, is the giant Kaiju lizard that is Godzilla. The king of the monsters has been portrayed throughout its long cinematic history as either a destructive monster or, like in his most recent outing, a hero of the people.

Seen in the most recent take on the character, Godzilla continues to be a force of nature not to be reckoned with. Ever since his first appearance in 1954, the giant monster continues to cause destruction wherever he goes as well as his invasion into pop-culture; I mean Godzilla has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for cripes sake!

That’s it for my list; let me know what you think of it and who (or what) would make your list in the comments!
Honourable mentions of those that didn’t quite make the cut include:

"Feed me seymour!"

Ants – Them!
Audrey II – Little Shop of Horrors
Balrog – Lord of the Rings
T-Rex – Jurassic Park
Nancy – Attack of the 50 Foot Woman
Stay Puft Marshmallow Man – Ghostbusters
Alien Tripod – War of the Worlds
Rancor – Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi

Blue Mountain State: The Movie (Successful Kickstarter Campaign)

If you’re a fan of booze, smoking, wild partying, raunchy comedy, sex, booze, hazing, drugs, booze, reckless American colleges, booze and of course booze American football, then you’ll love Blue Mountain State. The outrageously crude comedy that ran for three seasons is set in the American college of the same name and revolves around an irresponsible football team pursuing glory on the field and glory in the bedroom.

The main star of the show was Alan Ritchson’s Thad Castle who played as the football team’s captain and star line-backer. Castle was an extremely eccentric character who provided a majority of the show’s greatest moments. Imagine Stifler from the American Pie franchise mixed with Zac Efron’s character from Bad Neighbours with the physique of Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street to gather a rough idea of what he (and the series) was like…

After a poor show of ratings in the third season, Spike TV Network cancelled the show despite it continuing to gather a huge cult following; so big that it resulted in the talk of potential BMS movie or another season back in 2012.

And then came along 2014 where the Kickstarter campaign was born. Kickstarter saw a successful attempt of bringing a cancelled yet loved TV show to the big screen in the form of Veronica Mars, so what was stopping BMS? At the beginning of April, the cast and creators of the show launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund the dreams of what fans have been craving since cancellation. BMS: The Movie set a steep target of $1.5 million, one of three to only set a mark beyond the million dollar mark.
One of the various movie posters given as a reward

Over the course of a month, extensive marketing strategies with American universities and merchandise sales helped to secure a final figure of $1.9 million from 24,000 backers to bring the film from a dream to a reality. As well as the various rewards fans received from donating money to the project, they also received a fitting director for the film.

Jay Chandrasekhar, who directed some of the best episodes of the show, as well as directing various episodes of Arrested Development, Community, and the 2005 film Dukes of Hazzard will helm the film. His experience with comedies and even with the show’s characters will no doubt benefit in shaping an interesting and outrageous reunion of the long awaited return of Blue Mountain State and the Mountain Goats football team.

Details of the film as of now are scarce, aside for an almost full return of the cast, that is. More information soon to follow when plot/script details will be released. Stay tuned.
