With the
2014 San Diego Comic-Con now over, it’s time to take a look back at some of the
highlights of SDCC.
Comic book
shows clearly led the way this year, with big DC hitters Arrow, Gotham, The Flash &
Constantine leading the way with cast and plot details (as well as
trailers) for the huge fan base that is now gathering. Arrow, entering its third season this October, revealed Roy Harper finally suited up as Arsenal as well as the big bad
protagonist in the form of Ra’s al Ghul in the latest trailer, which you can
check out here:
Ra’s will most likely be taking a backseat this
season and perhaps merely pulling the strings, much like Thanos is for the
Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Speaking of
the Marvel, since 2010, they have been blowing away fans with footage, teasers,
cast and film titles but this year had a rather underwhelming turn-up. Despite
Marvel bringing the core cast for their TV shows Agent Carter & Agents of
S.H.I.E.L.D. (S.H.I.E.L.D. announced that they will be adding Mockingbird
for season 2) as well as their upcoming films Ant-Man & The Avengers
along for their panel. They also premiered some brief footage for both films, but
that was about it. Ant-Man announced
that Yellowjacket (another superhero) will also be in the movie but how much
though, is still to be seen. The first official poster for both films was also
released, which you can see below:
Most –
especially ones not in attendance – fans were hoping that Marvel would release
the official titles for more of their upcoming films, as they had announced
nine new dates up to 2019… But all they announced was one title, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on July 28,
2017 which is still very welcomed news! As always, they brought along a few
props, this time from the upcoming Age of
Ultron, one being Captain America’s shield broken into 3 pieces and the
other being part of Ultron himself. These two props also spell BIG things
happening in the upcoming team-up.
The full

But Comic-Con
is not all about comic books, this is also the time for other movies and TV
shows to debut some of their big news. This year
saw the reveal of the new cast of the hit HBO show Game of Thrones, which you can see here, half of them being the
Sand children. These happen to be the bastard children of Prince Oberyn, the
fan favourite of Season 4… For those who have seen it, you can imagine why they’re
coming into the show. As well as this, the creators also indicated that the
show will start to diverge from the books, but how much we do not yet know.
Other shows
brought their A-game as well, like FOX’s Family
Guy & The Simpsons, all in
preparation for their upcoming crossover this fall. A whole 5 minute preview
clip was released which you can check out here.
Hannibal also released some season 3 details
and Sam Raimi announced that he is developing an Evil Dead TV series, based on the game. Staying on the apocalyptic-esque
drama, The Walking Dead also released
new details for Season 5 and an epic trailer, for which you can see for yourself:
The cast and
creators of Community were present to
talk about their cancellation and their phoenix-like rise from the ashes as
they move to their new home on Yahoo Screen.
On to the
film side of things, as announcements of a rebooted King Kong film, Skull Island, is in the works for
Legendary Pictures, as is Godzilla 2.
Perhaps this will lead to an epic clash between Kong and Godzilla. But this
would have to wait as Godzilla director
Gareth Edwards will be having some time off before tackling the first Star Wars spinoff film before
he makes his way back for the sequel.
Warcraft, the movie based on the hit online
game World of Warcraft, was also present to show some teaser footage and some
new details regarding the upcoming film. Staying with the video game
adaptations, the cast and crew of Hitman:
Agent 47 were on hand to drop details about the project with star Zachary
Quinto promising that the film would be a high stakes video game movie. As well
as this, Neil Druckmann, creator of The
Last of Us, the hit post-apocalyptic game mentioned that they have met with
Maisie Williams (Arya Stark of Game of
Thrones) about her starring as the titular role of Ellie in their upcoming
film adaptation.
Christopher
Nolan’s new upcoming Sci-fi Interstellar
also dropped a new trailer as did Sin
City: A Dame to Kill For, with the latter hitting at a Sin City 3;
hopefully both trailers will be up online to the public in the near future.
Other big
hitters, like the final Hobbit movie in the trilogy, The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies, also released a trailer (which
you can see below) as did the final Hunger Games film, Mockingjay Part 1, with the teaser here.
One of the
newbies on the block was Robert Kirkman’s (creator of The Walking Dead) directorial
film debut, Air, with a trailer which
you can see here. Kirkman’s film stars TWD’s fan favourite Norman
Reedus and the pair, along with Djimon Hounsou trade in zombies for nuclear war
as the film follows the aftermath and survival of such an event.
But the big
surprise of Comic-Con 2014 is the upcoming Mad Max film Mad Max: Fury Road. The footage gathered an incredible reaction and
with impressive special effects, Tom Hardy as Max and the film (what looks
like) to be taking place almost entirely on the road, this could be a big
hitter come 2015. You can check out the trailer here.
Although
there is a lot that I have missed out from this year’s Comic-Con, such as
details of Helix Season 2, Star Wars Rebels, Teen Wolf and many many
more, it’s hard to pick out all the details amidst all the mayhem of new
information being released over a weekend; besides, this is just a quick
insight into one of the biggest events of the year.
