Transformers 4: Age of Extinction Review

Roar. Said the Dinobot...

After a financially (but definitely NOT critically) successful transformers trilogy, you would have thought Michael Bay and Paramount Pictures would have put a lid on it and left it alone… Oh no.

Enter Age of Extinction. The latest film in the franchise, the one that is a semi-reboot of the original trilogy (as in, new characters, settings and storylines, dropping Shia LaBeouf and others) takes us on an unnecessarily long journey through time, in order for Hasbro to just sell more toys and taint the Dinobots and Transformers name!

The film itself does have an impressive array of special effects and fight sequences, a classic Michael Bay-esque film (read: lots of explosions and lots of corny jokes throughout), if you like that kind of thing and the Dinobots really showed why they are legendary warriors (i.e. they really make the film in the short time they’re in it…) but other than that, there are very few positive things to say about it.

The runtime was almost excruciating and too long, where a lot of it could have been cut AND still make sense for the story's development. The overall acting was rather poor, although Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci’s performances are more on the positive side of things, but just not enough. Some most of the writing throughout was also pretty poor and only drags out the film even more.

In all honesty, as much as I love Transformers (as I grew up with them) they should have stopped making them after the first one. However, despite the obvious negatives in this film, it is still better that Transformers 2 & 3. Age of Extinction has a much better storyline than the previous two, but was just poorly executed. The coming fifth and sixth installments already planned for it – it’s not like we don’t have enough sequels already, huh Hollywood!? – gives me a huge sense of trepidation for the franchise and clearly something needs to be addressed in order to fix it. Whether that’s getting better writers, getting rid of Michael Bay, most definitely cutting down the run-time or getting a new cast, I don’t care; it just needs to be fixed.

That being said, if you have money to spare and a good 3 hours to waste then I would recommend Age of Extinction as it is still a relatively enjoyable watch…
